The best remedy for mosquito bites - including those that transmit disease - is to prevent them in the first place. Use these tips to help stay bite-free this summer:

  1. Stay indoors at dusk when mosquitoes are out and about. Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved tops, and tuck long pants into your socks.
  2. Stay away from black and white fabrics, which seem to drive the bugs wild.
  3. Turn on an outdoor fan - the wind can help keep the bugs at bay.
  4. Try oils such as soybean oil, and mixtures of essential oils, such as pennyroyal oil and eucalyptus.
  5. These are moderately effective if you're not dealing with really thick swarms of mosquitoes.
  6. In places like Alaska, Canada or the northern Midwest, where mosquitoes can be overwhelming, regularly apply insect repellants containing geraniol, a plant-derived compound, or neem oil, from the Indian tree Azadirachta indica.

    1. Carbonated drinks of club soda, seltzer water, and other "sparkling" waters may irritate sensitive bladders.
    2. Coffee, tea, energy drinks, and colas can all lead to more bathroom visits.
    3. Chocolate has caffeine and acid. So eat less of it, and don’t snack on it late in the evening.
    4. Oranges, grapefruits, clementines, lemons, and limes are all acidic and can make it harder to control the urge to pee, whether you eat them or drink their juice.
    5. You may find that pineapple isn't your friend either. That's because it’s acidic.
    6. You may have to cut back on tomato-based foods like spaghetti sauce, chili, and ketchup, too.
    7. Because they’re acidic, these berries and juices made from them could spell trouble.
    8. Beer, wine, liquor -- alcohol in any form makes you need to pee more.
    9. Hot eats these may do more than tingle your taste buds or make your eyes water.
    10. Artificial sweeteners, sugar, and honey may set off your symptoms.
    11. Onions, cook them to make them easier on your system. You could also switch to the milder, onion-like shallot, too.
    12. It’s not just citrus fruits that can trigger the need to pee. Other fruits like apples, bananas, and grapes could be to blame, too.
    13. Soy sauce, vinegar, ketchup, mayonnaise... lots of condiments contain acids or other problem ingredients.
    14. Artificial flavors, preservatives, and additives like MSG and benzyl alcohol may irritate the bladder.
