Placentophagy is known as the ingestion of placenta, at any time, by any person, either in raw or altered (e.g., cooked, dried, steeped in liquid) form.

Placenta is an embryonic tissue formed during pregnancy from the cells of the fetus. The unique biological compounds in placenta ensure that the fetus is supplied with the necessary nutrients and oxygen needed for successful growth. The placenta is rejected at birth in humans.

Some mammalian females consume their placenta (the “after-birth”) after delivering their offspring.  Human placentophagy, the consumption of human placenta postpartum has been undergoing a small revival in Western cultures, but however alternative now in deer placenta has opened up.
Deer Placenta is very similar to the human placenta in terms of chemical and biological construction, which is widely accepted as the main source of placenta today. The deer or “Divine Creature” is perceived to be a valuable animal, thus food related to the deer is also considered to be nutritious tonics. In the history of Chinese medicine, body organs of the deer (like pizzle, testicles, blood, velvet, heart and tail) are regarded as rare medicinal herbs.

However, scientific research provides no evidence yet that consuming the placenta prevents or treats postpartum depression, and there is inconclusive evidence that it has any health benefits whatsoever.

Among the Chinese and Vietnamese, it is a customary practice to prepare the placenta for consumption by the mother. The placenta is thought to be rich in nutrients that the mother needs to recover more readily from childbirth.

In Italy, women have been known to eat parts of the placenta to help with lactation. Hungarian women bite the placenta to expedite the completion of labor.

Chinese antiaging and restorative formulations have often relied upon placenta as a primary ingredient in formulations designed to rejuvenate the body. Deer placenta has been accepted as the premier source of placenta. Deer is considered to be a “higher order” animal, and deer placenta very closely resembles human placenta chemically. It is extraordinarily nourishing and is completely safe to consume.
