Cranberry - The Ruby of North America

Cranberry, a glossy, scarlet red, very tart berry native to America, lives only in highly acid soil on cold highlands in the north of the U.S, Canada and Chile.

For the Native Americans, the "Ruby of North America" means nutrition and health. They enjoyed cranberries cooked and sweetened with honey or maple syrup and used them as poultice for wounds.

As early as the age of colonialism the tart red berry was one of the products exported to England from the "new continent". In 1667, New Englanders sent to King Charles 10 barrels of cranberries, 3 barrels of codfish and some Indian corn. Codfish and corn decayed after the long voyage.

Cranberry shot to fame when presented to the King as it had been in New England. From then on studies on the antibacterial effects of cranberry became popular.

Today cranberry is a daily health product for American households. It is effective on oxidation, aging, digestive disease, urinary tract infection (UTI), cancer and oral problems. According to the United States Pharmacopeia, cranberry is first choice among products against UTI.
